Google Search Ranking Volatility Tools Show Signs of Stabilisation

13 Jan, 2025

For the first time in quite a while, third-party Google Search volatility tools are reflecting more stable activity, returning to normal levels. While there have still been some fluctuations in search visibility, both positive and negative, the overall landscape appears to have settled significantly over the past week.

December 2024 was particularly intense in terms of search volatility, with the turbulence extending into the first week of January 2025. However, recent data indicates that the situation is finally stabilising.

To recap the past few months:

  • The November 2024 Core Update concluded in December.
  • Shortly thereafter, the December 2024 Core Update was initiated and finalised, alongside the December 2024 Spam Update.

These successive updates created a highly volatile environment, which persisted even after the final algorithm adjustments of 2024. Adding to the complexity, there was a peculiar Google local ranking bug last weekend that went unaddressed by Google.

Looking ahead, 2025 is anticipated to bring more core updates, which could continue to shape the search landscape. For now, though, the tools are signalling a welcome period of calm.

As of Saturday, January 11th, most tracking tools indicate a notable decline in volatility, reflecting a significant stabilisation in search rankings.

While there is still some on-going discussion within the SEO community, the intensity of chatter has noticeably diminished compared to the heightened activity of previous weeks.

Could this period of calm be a prelude to further changes? With an increased number of core updates anticipated in 2025, it may be wise to remain prepared for potential shifts in the search landscape.
